The pattern is denser on the lid and loosens down the body, and it shifts with the light: steel grey at rest, blue when the sun catches it. The rim and the knob fire to a warm bronze where the glaze runs thin. The lid is held slightly ajar and the tea poured through the gap, which suits fine leaf that wants room to open. Hashimoto Daisuke (橋本大輔) was born in 1973 and works from his own kiln in Shiga Prefecture, just over the hills from Kyoto. He has spent his career on tenmoku, the iron glazes that came to Japan from China with the tea culture of the medieval monasteries, and is regarded as one of the youngest specialists in the field. He is a full member of the Japan Kōgei Association, and his oil-spot tenmoku has been selected repeatedly for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, the country's principal juried craft show, most recently the 71st exhibition.
